Vertebroplasty - Cement Augumentation for Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression fractures

A 73 year old female from Patna came to us with severe back pain. She had history of fall at home following which she developed severe back pain. She initially consulted at Patna where a MRI was done. MRI showed compression fracture of D9 vertebrae. She was advised complete bed rest for 3 months with toilet activities in Bed. However Patient was uncomfortable for this and had excruciating pain whenever she tried going to washroom. So to get rid of pain and make her movements comfortable, She was advised Cement Augumentation at Patna. At this point Patient came to us at Jaypee Hospital for further treatment. Patient underwent Vertebroplasty under local anaesthesia. We also augumented the adjacent vertebra above and below D9 to prevent adjacent segment fractures. Patient was mobilsed out of bed the same evening and had significant pain releif. Her Dexa scan showed severe osteoporosis and she was started on injection Terriparatide.

Osteoporotic fractures are initially managed conservatively with rest and brace, but those patients with severe pain and those developing non union benefit from Vertebroplasty. Vertebroplasty is a safe procedure done under local anaesthesia with excellent outcomes.
